It was so hard years ago to eat out being a coeliac. Now it’s
not as hard as most restaurants cater for the gluten free diet.
Here are my top 5 restaurants in London that cater for being
Gluten Free. It’s daunting going to a new city and not knowing where to eat!
No. 1 Cotto Italian - Waterloo
I love this little restaurant. They provide both gluten free
and non-gluten free dishes but have two separate kitchens. The owner is lovely
and tells you all about his life and how he was diagnosed as a coeliac in Italy
when he was younger and no one had ever heard of it in Italy. Their pasta is
all freshly made, and the gluten free bread is lovely. Their portions are huge
too, so you most definitely get your money’s worth! It is opposite Lambeth
North Station but you can walk from Waterloo too. It’s best to book though, as
it is only a small restaurant and can get very busy! They serve Pasta dishes
and Pizza too…well worth a try!
Price Range: £5.60 - £22
Serves Alcohol: Yes
No.2 The Truscott Arms – Maida Vale
This little gem has a fantastic menu full of all things
Gluten Free. Generally British food is full of flour and batter, things that us
Coeliac’s can’t eat! But here at the Truscott Arms you can actually have Fish
and Chips, and Bangers and Mash without having to worry! Their menu is clearly
labelled for those following a Gluten Free diet. Let’s hope more Gastro Pubs
follow suit!
Price Range: £5-£22 or an Evening set menu of 2 course for
£27 or 3 for £32
Serves Alcohol: Yes
No 3. Pizza Express and Prezzo
These well-known pizza chains now provide a gluten free
pizza base. Pizza Express’ classic and Romano pizzas can be made with a Gluten Free
Base, and just the classic base in Prezzo. It is so nice to be able to go to a
pizza restaurant and not be left out. Now all they need to do is sell these
pre-packaged in the cold section of the supermarket! I think they would make a
killing! My favourite Prezzo pizza is the Fiorentina and has to be the American
hot at Pizza Express. Watch out for Pizza Hut too, as they now do a Gluten Free
Pizza. This can be ordered for both dine in and take away. Domino’s pizza also
do a Gluten Free base, I just wish this was available when I was at Uni!
Price Range: £10-£15
Serves Alcohol: Yes – Gluten Free Beer too! (Pizza Express)
No 4. Honest Burger
The one thing about being a coeliac I missed was being able
to sink my teeth into a big juicy burger. Fortunately, Honest Burgers have been
popping up all over the place. All their burgers can be provided with a gluten
free bun, and the best thing is the prices include a side of chips too! You can
eat in or take away, and I am just glad that there is one 2 minutes from my
office in case I need a big lunch. They also serve Gluten Free Beer so you won’t
miss out on a thing. It’s only a pound extra to get a gluten free bun! They
have a few lurking around central London, so is perfect for the tourist
coeliac.
At the moment Honest Burger are promoting a Catalan Gluten Free Friendly special! Burger with Serrano ham, GF romesco sauce, tetilla cheese and grilled peppers and fries, all washed down with a GF Daura Damm Beer for £15!

No. 5 Vozar’s – Brixton Village
This place caters for the Gluten Free
Dieter. All dishes are Gluten & Wheat free. They even sell Celia Beer,
which I have to say when I tasted it at the Allergy and Free From Show, I
loved. They serve Lunch and Dinner and have an amazing array of Gluten Free
deserts and cakes. To avoid disappointment you can email and reserve your
cakes! This quaint little restaurant in the heart of Brixton Village is a life
saver to those who don’t know what to eat..or where to eat..or are just too
embarrassed to ask for a Gluten Free Menu.
So there we have it. In a nutshell my 5 favourite
Restaurants serving Gluten Free dishes.
There are many more out there, and as demand grows, menus
are changing.
Look out for a Gluten Free menu:
La Tasca
Cabana
GBK
Zizzi
Nandos
Carluccios
