Allergy Awareness Week 2015


This week marks the start of #AllergyAwarenessWeek advocating awareness for all types of allergies.

As you are all aware I have coeliac disease, but I am also allergic to crustaceans. 

Some people have a serious allergy to nuts and my own mum has a serious allergy to most raw fruit and some nuts, meaning she has to be extremely careful especially when eating out as she too goes into anaphylaxis.

I was shocked and surprised to hear the story of Amy Shead on twitter via her devoted friends and family. 

Amy had a serious allergic reaction to nuts while in Hungry last year and even showed them an allergy card translated in Hungarian. She suffered severe anaphylaxis and was hospitalised for months. 

She suffered brain damage as a result of lack of oxygen to the brain.

This story really touched my heart and rings true to a similar experience I had when I was in Dublin a few weeks ago. I asked what on the menu I could have being a coeliac and was told the wrong information. I was far too trusting and should not have let my guard down. I had to suffer the consequences which ruined my evening, the rest of the holiday and was subsequently ill for about a week after the event! 

 This is why campaigns like #AllergyAwarenessWeek are so important - stressing the importance around allergies and the consequences of negligence. 

Coeliac Awareness Week is also up and coming in May - let's make our voices heard!

  1. I too am thankful for the allergy awareness week. I have extreme abdominal pain when consuming dairy. Once in college, I ordered a soy latte and found that soy wasn't added. I was in bed for 8 hours with extreme pain, unable to take my final exam and failing the class. Misinformation about what food and drinks contain is very dangerous.
